Medical Assisting

Mission: The mission of this program, accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), is to provide students with the best quality training in order for them to achieve their career goals in the health care industry.

 

Program H170503 consists of a planned sequence of courses.

 

Basic Healthcare Worker - Course HSC0003 (90 hours) – Instruction covers basic health care, wellness and disease prevention, safety procedures, employability skills, communication skills, interpersonal skills, basic mathematics, science and computer literacy.

 

Medical Office Receptionist - Course MEA0500 (100 hours) – Content includes studies in basic clerical and office duties and identifies the legal and ethical liabilities of the medical office. Content also includes keyboarding, maintaining medical records, facilities management, telephone techniques, scheduling appointments, and handling mail and written correspondence.

 

Phlebotomist, MA - Course MEA0521 (75 hours) – Content includes studies in anatomic structure and function of body systems in relation to services performed by a phlebotomist; safe practice, quality assurance, and techniques used for various types of blood collection.

 

Electrocardiograph (EKG) Aide, MA - Course MEA0543 (75 hours) – Content includes anatomy and physiology of the circulatory system, the cardiac cycle, usage of a multi-channel/automatic electrocardiography machine, identification of artifacts, and patient education and preparation.

 

Medical Assistant, 1 of 3 - Course MEA0550 (320 hours) – Content includes communication skills, legal aspects, body system review, asepsis, and emergency preparedness.

 

Medical Assistant, 2 of 3 - Course MEA0551 (320 hours) – Content includes assisting with the physical exam, minor office procedures, diagnostic studies, pharmacology, x-ray skills, and administrative duties.

 

Medical Assistant, 3 of 3 - Course MEA0552 (320 hours) – Content includes laboratory procedures and externship in the clinical setting.

 

Special Admission Requirements: A high school diploma or a GED is required for this program. Specific health occupations admission guidelines (immunizations, drug screening, background check, etc.) are available in Admissions.
